Phenomenal 1970s Native American Hopi Masau'u Kachina by Arthur Yowytewa (1921-2006), Bacavi Village, Third Mesa, measures 11.25''H x 4.25''W x 4.75''Deep and is signed on the bottom, embellished with single shell, hand painted cloth, and feathers, ''He is a kachina and deity. He is a God of life/death. Very important in Hopi religious life. He isthe only kachina that can come at any time during the year. He can sometimes talk backwards and walk backwards.'' FYI: ''Arthur (1921-2006) was born into the Sun Clan in Bacavi, Arizona. He was taught by his father and started carving in the late 1940's. His work is in the permanent collections of the Heard Museum and the Indian Arts and Crafts Council in DC.
