Adolphus Hope began building saddles in Texas in the 1830’s. His design eventually changed into the Santa Fe and Great Plains saddles and became the most popular saddle used by the early Texans. The Hope saddles had thetypical Mexican short, flat, oversized horn. The early Hope saddles had much of the tree exposed. In 1856 General Joseph E. Johnston commanding the Second Cavalry, required all of his officers to purchase Hope saddles ifthey could afford to buy one. Four hundred Hope saddles were ordered by the army from Rice and Childress of San Antonio in 1857. There is some question as to whether the Hopesaddle evolved from the Santa De saddle or if the Santa Fe saddle developed from the Hope saddle. At any rate the saddles had many aspects in common.This saddle was hand made by Dale E. Moore of Belgrade, Montana. This shows a impressive craftsmanship by a master saddle maker and teach.
