Honolulu,HI - Honolulu County - October 14, 1871 - Hawaiian Royal Family Land Deed *Territorial* :
A two-page land deed transferring land located in Waikahalulu, Honolulu from Hawaii High Chief Charles Kanaina, Father of King William Lunalilo, to E.O. Hall. This royal document has two embossed Royal Revenue seals, one clear and imprinted, and one that is green. Rare. Ex: Lyman/Bond Collection. High Chief Charles Kanaina (1801-1877) was a member of the House of Nobles of Kamehameha III from 1841-1876, and he served on the Supreme Court from 1845 and on the Privy Council from 1845-1855. King William Lunalilo, his son, was the last of the House of Keoua Nui to reign as King of Hawaii. He was considered a spendthrift and even his father Kanaina took steps to have his son placed under a guardianship, which was granted. Kanaina leased and later his heirs would sell thousands of acres of land on the island of Hawaii to businessman and son of missionaries William Herbert Shipman (1854-1943) and others, E.O. Hall for example. Shipman's sister, by the way, married Lorrin A. Thurston, the nominal leader of the Committee of Safety. Edwin O. Hall, later together with his son, owned a hardware and dry goods store in Honolulu beginning in 1852. He was a prosperous businessman and interestingly became one of 9 trustees appointed by the Supreme Court of Hawaii in 1877 to control King Wm. Lunalilo's holdings--and six of these were future members of the Committee of Safety. [Ref: www.luckyulivehawaii.com and www.books.google.com/books?isbn=0824832116].
