Very rare; we have no records of selling this in over 10 years. "Mines in the Pike's Peak Gold Mining District" printed to the left of the underground mining vignette. Inc. in Colorado. No. 224, issued for 2,000 shares to AJ Hastings in 1897 in North Bend, Nebraska. Signed by president JH Johnson and secretary Castle. Not cancelled. Black border and print, gold seal. Folds, small tear on fold. Approx. 8 x 10". This was one of the first districts organized in Colorado, located 11 miles NW of Leadville. The Homestake was known to be the first mine in the area to produce silver-lead ore. It is also the site of the "Homestake Horror of 1885." Ten young miners elected to stay and winter over at the mine even though it was in a remote, high elevation location. When they failed to appear after a long absence, two men were sent out on snowshoes from Eight Mile House. After a grueling climb, they found that the mine buildings had been destroyed by an avalanche. All 10 miners had been killed. An ornate funeral and parade was held in Leadville.
