Home Brew V1#1 - H. P. Lovecraft (E. D. Houtain, 1922) Condition: FN. Howard Phillips Lovecraft is one of America's undisputed masters of supernatural fiction and fantasy. His creations such as Cthulhu and the Necronomicon have become interwoven into the popular culture of our society. Here, we are pleased to offer at auction the scarce February 1922 edition of Home Brew, an obscure journal which contains Lovecraft's first published professional fiction. Described as "Grewsome Tales by Howard P. Lovecraft," it contains "From the Dark," which is part one of the six-part story that would come to be known as Herbert West - Reanimator, and would spawn a successful 1985 film by director Stuart Gordon that was titled simply "Reanimator." The introduction to the story in this book reveals Lovecraft's obvious talent, even in this early period: "The name of Edgar Poe comes triumphantly -- and here, smacking of his genius is the story of 'Herbert West, Reanimator' from the pen of one of the most gifted of the newer school. Do the Dead Come to Life? Can we penetrate beyond what we mortals call death, solve its mysteries and Reanimate the corpse?" Especially interesting in this particular copy are two small corrections noted in the Lovecraft story, an "e" marked in pen between the B and I in "plebeian" on page 22, and "un" added to the front of "utterable" on page 24. This item comes from a collection that had other books with corrections by Lovecraft, and while it cannot be positively authenticated, it seems very possible that this copy was once owned -- and corrected -- by Mr. Lovecraft himself. In any case, the book itself is in remarkable condition with clean, bright surfaces, sharp corners, fresh paper quality, and tight staples. Other than very minor storage and handling wear, there are no notable defects to mention. Don't miss out on this book - unending madness and damnation by the Old Great Ones may be the prerequisite to ever finding another copy!

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
