<B>Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI Letter.</B></I> Manuscript Letter Signed: <I>"Carl"</B></I> as Holy Roman Emperor, three pages, 8" x 12", front and verso. Vienna, February 1, 1712. In German, roughly translated into English. To Ludwig, Duke of Bavaria. Notations and official seal affixed with red wax on fourth page. The Emperor informs Ludwig, Duke of Bavaria, that he has <I>"learned with misgivings"</B></I> about a situation involving the commander of Strigau, the Count of Aursberg. He orders that Ludwig <I>"and the town council of Strigau examine those persons"</B></I> involved and find out <I>"why and from what time the excise has not been paid by the above mentioned Count of Aursberg and what the withheld quantity amounts to, furthermore yet, how much grain the same recently forcefully stored in the town...."</B></I><BR><BR>Charles VI (1685-1740) was Holy Roman Emperor (1711-1740), King of Bohemia (17111740) and, as Charles III, King of Hungary (17121740). He was the last Holy Roman emperor of the direct Hapsburg line. In 1700, he was designated successor in Spain to King Charles II, who was childless. On his deathbed, however, Charles II left his throne to Philip of Anjou (Philip V), grandson of King Louis XIV of France and was proclaimed King in November 1700. War broke out immediately against Kings Louis XIV and Philip. Although Charles, with the aid of British troops, invaded Spain and proclaimed himself King as Charles III in 1704, he was able to rule only in Catalonia at Barcelona. This letter was written during the War of the Spanish Succession. A year later, by the Peace of Utrecht, a series of treaties concluded the war. Philip V remained king of Spain and Charles received most of the Spanish possessions in the Low Countries and in Italy. Stained, but boldly penned in dark ink, bearing countersignatures. Accompanied by an old engraving of Charles VI, 4" x 6.5", captioned: "Carolus VI/Rom. Imp. Germ. Hisp. Hung./et Boh. Rex. Archi Dux Austria etc. etc." Two items. <I>From the Henry E.
