Composer Jerome Kern's personal copy of the ''revised final'' script of the 1945 20th Century Fox film ''Centennial Summer'', dated 8 August 1945. Kern was nominated posthumously at the 19th Academy Awards ceremony for his score of the song ''All Through the Day'' in 1946. Kern enjoyed a wildly successful career that evolved from composer of Broadway musicals and innovator in the genre, to scorer of Hollywood films, earning 2 Oscars and a total of 8 nominations. Kern's music is known for its very specific relevance to movie plots, to the extent that he resisted his songs being played out of context. Jerome Kern received top billing in ''Centennial Summer,'' and Oscar Hammerstein II provided the lyrics. The film is based on a novel by Albert E. Idell, about a pair of sisters in Philadelphia who fall in love with the same man. Kern is known for such major hits as ''Show Boat,'' ''Ol' Man River,'' ''Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,'' ''The Way You Look Tonight'' and nearly 700 more. Script has multiple pencil markings, including underlining and circling, presumably in Kern's hand. ''Jerome Kern / Bring 6'' and ''office copy'' are written at top of front cover, possibly by Kern. A handwritten note in pencil on p. 24 relates to the music in the film, ''see thematic material in square one dance. Orig. and revised. See Dogs motif.'' Script runs 122pp. and measures 8.5'' x 11'' with some toning and wear throughout, particularly to covers of script. Very good overall.
