Sylvester Phelps Hodgdon (American, 1830-1906). Both are
scenes of the docks in Boston Harbor/ South Boston. He was
probably inspired by the wonderful
Thames River prints of J McN Whistler.
This one is Dover Street Bridge Titled and signed S.P.
Hodgdon in the plate, lower left. Unnumbered. As seen in image
3.
<p>Framed in plain black moulding without matting.

Image measures 6-3/4 x 4 inches.

Finished size: 11-1/2 x 9-1/2.
<p>Hodgdon was born Christmas Day to a Salem sea captain.
He
studied
in Boston with Ben Champney and in New York with Samuel
Rouse. For thirty years he kept a studio in the Studio Building at
Tremont and Park Streets, opossite the Boston Common. His
home was
on Savin Hill Avenue.
Hodgdon was
a member of the Boston Atheneum and St Botolph Club. The
Boston Arts Club, of which he was a founding member, was
organized in his studio. He taught Life class at Boston Museum
School and Boston Art Club.

Hodgdon traveled throught New England painting en
plein air. He is best known for his landscapes, views of the
White Mountains of New Hampshire and coastal scenes.
