For nearly 90 years, the secret of this mid-19th century issue's rarity has remained a mystery. In the early 1930s, Frank Ross, from Kansas City, began to promote these pieces. Ross is given credit for coining the name "Little Orphan Annie" in connection with this issue. This name is most likely derived from the nation's fascination in the Orphan Annie character that began in 1924. "Little Orphan Annie" turned out to be fitting as Ross tried to paint the coin as the unwanted orphan of numismatics. Eventually, Ross' hype led to public interest in the dime itself, and spurred questions such as, "Why is the 1844 dime so scarce in comparison to its 1845 counterpart whose mintage is more than a million pieces larger?" and "Why is it so famous?" Once these questions were widely asked, a numismatic legend was created. One of the many myths that grew out of the 1844 legend was that in 1844, California '49ers had requested $5,000 in small change. As the story goes, Washington granted this request and on the coins' trip westward, the 50,000 1844 dimes were captured and subsequently buried by Indians. Another story places the dimes in the middle of the great Chicago fire. As it stands, the real reason for the true rarity of the 1844 dime goes unanswered, but it leaves the numismatic community with something that is truly legendary. The staggering size of this hoard is a testament to the focus and affinity the consignor had for this issue. The fact that 612 "Little Orphan Annies" were amassed and are now offered as one lot can only add to the legendary status of this issue.<BR>All the coins in this lot, if not limited by extensive wear or defects, show similar characteristics. Heavy die polishing is seen along the rims of all detailed examples and the AM and RI in AMERICA are connected. On the obverse, the 8 is placed slightly higher than the other numbers and the right edge of the final 4 is in line with a dentil. No visible die cracks were seen on any of the coins. No second die variety was found. Within the lot, only one curiosity exists. One of the Net Good 4 examples (ANACS # 2366035) displays two "peaks" above the T in UNITED that appear to be an internal die cud. All the diagnostics for this coin are consistent with the others, but none of the other 611 examples display this feature.<BR>The breakdown by grade is: (6) Net Poor 1 ANACS; Poor 1 ANACS; (13) Net Fair 2 ANACS; (17) Fair 2 ANACS; (24) Net AG3 ANACS; (40) AG3 ANACS; Good 4 Scratched, Surface Residue Uncertified; (48) Net Good 4 ANACS; (33) Good 4 ANACS; (13) Net Good 6 ANACS; (23) Good 6 ANACS; VG8 Cleaned Uncertified; (36) Net VG8 ANACS; (59) VG8 ANACS; VG10 Cleaned, Corroded Uncertified; (5) Net VG10 ANACS; (38) VG10 ANACS; VG10 PCI; Fine 12 Possible Counterfeit Uncertified; Fine 12 Damaged, Possible Counterfeit Uncertified; Fine 12 Damaged, Cleaned Uncertified; Fine 12 Cleaned, Scratched Uncertified; (2) Fine 12 Cleaned Uncertified; (27) Net Fine 12 ANACS; Fine 12 Uncertified; (41) Fine 12 ANACS; Fine 12 ICG; Fine 12 PCGS; (15) Net Fine 15 ANACS; Fine 15 Uncertified; (19) Fine 15 ANACS; Fine 15 NGC; (4) Fine 15 PCGS; VF20 Polished Uncertified; (12) Net VF20 ANACS; VF20 Uncertified; (39) VF20 ANACS; (3) VF20 PCGS; (22) VF25 ANACS; (2) VF25 PCGS; (3) Net VF30 ANACS; (11) VF30 ANACS; Net VF35 ANACS; (8) VF35 ANACS; VF35 NGC; VF35 PCGS; XF40 Whizzed Uncertified; (4) Net XF40 ANACS; (9) XF40 ANACS; (3) XF40 PCGS; (2) XF45 ANACS; (6) XF45 PCGS; AU50 ANACS; AU50 NGC; AU50 PCGS; and (2) AU53 PCGS.
