Ho Chi Minh (1890-1969) Vietnamese communist revolutionary leader who was prime minister (1945-1955) and president (1945-1969) of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam (North Vietnam). He led the Viet Minh independence movement from 1941, blending communism and nationalism, and fought to end colonialism in Vietnam, defeating the French at Dien Bien Phu in 1954 and persevering against American military might. After the war, Saigon was renamed Ho Chí Minh City. Signature on a Japanese 100 yen note, 6¼ x 3¾ in., n.p., n.d. Signed in upper left corner of verso, the ink having faded to brown.
