(20th Century Fox, 1981) Pencil, charcoal, and India ink concept sketches on (3) sheets of 8.5 x 11” note paper, and (1) browntone 10 x 16.5” storyboard, all by production designer Harold Michelson for Mel Brooks’ comedy classic History of the World: Part I. Two of the sketches are for two of the most memorable and outrageous scenes in the entire film, namely the “Stone Age” bit where the first art critic urinates on the work of the first artist, and the “Spanish Inquisition” sequence where orthodox Jews are turned into a living torture/slot machine(this sketch signed and dated 79 by Michelson). The third original sketch is an elaborate torture device presumed to be for the Inquisition, and the browntone storyboard(also signed by Michelson) is of slave owners and cotton-pickers, a time period not finally covered by the finished film. All are in Excellent condition.
