A two volume set originally written in 1875 by Theophilus Rodenbough, this is the very unique Extra Illustrated version set forth in 1894 and published by Van Nostrand (New York). "From Everglade to Cañon with the Second Dragoons" (Second United States Cavalry). An Authentic Account of Service in Florida, Mexico, Virginia, and the Indian Country, including the Personal Recollections of Prominent Officers with an appendix containing Orders, Reports, and Correspondence, Military Records, Etc, etc., etc. 1836 - 1875. Hard cover, half morocco with bright orange marbled paper-covered boards, binding gilt-stamped with the regimental emblem. Condition: Very Good, with some restoration. 1st Edition. This copy one of twelve prepared as a special extra-illustrated edition made for the contributors of the various sections of the book in 1894. 561 pages + supplemental material, 5 chromo lithographic plates by Edwin Forbes, 11 wood engravings, 6 pen and ink drawings, 2 folding maps, index, photographic plate of the regimental standard, a sketch of the service of the Second Cavalry, and a supplemental index. The extra illustrations consist mostly of tipped in photographic portraits of the officers of the Second Cavalry, signed by those officers beneath their portraits! Signed beneath portraits by Col. A. T. Lee, Bvt. Major General Philip St. George Cooke, Bvt. Major General Wesley Merritt, Col. Charles McK Loeser, Col. William Henry Harrison, Major Robert S. Smith, Major Alfred E. Bates, Bvt. Major Lewis Thompson, Lt. Gustavus C. Doane, Capt. E. J. McClernand. Each of these extra-illustrated copies was prepared for one of the contributors to this book - this copy was prepared for Col. William H. Harrison, author of Chapter XXVI, which covers part of the year 1864. Harrison's library stamp appears in the beginning of each volume, and his initials are embossed in gilt at the bottom of each spine. In terms of restoration,the front cover of vol. 2 has been expertly re-attached, internally neat and clean, with some laid-in clippings and a photograph of a monument to the "<I>position occupied by detachment of the 1st and 2nd United States Cavalry during July 3rd, 1863</B></I>," located at the Gettysburg battlefield. An extremely desirable Civil War collectible and a great book for the advanced military collector, one of twelve prepared thus, of which only a handful likely survive today.
