Historically significant sword owned by Major General Sir George Arthur French who was an army, militia and NWMP officer. Sir George Arthur French's contribution to Canadian history first involved serving with the Royal Artillery in Kingston an then setting up the Kingston School of Gunnery. The Royal Canadian Artillery museum at CFB Shiloh contains a number of exhibits dealing with this phase of his military life. In 1873 Sir George Arthur French was appointed as the first commissioner of the NWMP. He resigned in July 1876 because of the Liberal government's lack of financial support for the NWMP. The sword is the officers version of the 1821 pattern light cavalry sword with a now 1845 pattern Wilkinson-style blade with serial no. 25984. The sword, acquired by Ron Serbin in 2018 for $2500 from Barry Joseph French, the great-great-great- grandson of Sir George Arthur French, comes with a file documenting the complete provenance of the sword. The file includes the bill of sale for the sword, a signed statement by Barry Joseph French who is presently living in Glenboro Manitoba, a letter from Richard Milner of Armsresearch UK stating that the Wilkinson records show that blade 25984 was fitted to a sword owned by G.A.French Esq. R.M.L.I. in October 1884 along with a copy of the notation fom the archive. The file also contains material about Sir George Arthur French's military history in Canada and Australia along with the history of the French family both in the UK and in Canada. Itg is rare to find an antique sword with such detailed provenance.
