This is just an exceptional fantastic collector lot of items with some items actually belonging and purchased from a former USMC Raider by Al Siebel. Siebel believes his intials were RWW as evidence by them being scratched on two items. However, since it was around 1970 he can't remember the name. A note from Siebel states that the former USMC raider who lived in Garden City NY and that items were purchased directly from him in the 1970 timeframe. A short history, the 1st and 2nd Raider Battalions were the first "USMC Commando" or Special Forces of WWII. These units played a pivotal role in several of the early island hopping campaigns, their mission was to take the fight to the Japanese, taking no quarter and punishing the Japanese at all costs. Their motto was "Gung-Ho", which was a Chinese term for "work together-work in harmony" and became famous through out the Marines in WWII. The two raider battalions, were commanded by Evans Carlson, (the 1st) and Red Edson (the 2nd), both men has long distinguished careers with the USMC before the start of WWII and their legacy can be traced directly to the Marine RECON battalions of today. The Raiders launched some of the very first attacks against the Japanese during the Tulagi and Makin islands battles, as well as again performing critical missions on several other campaigns later in the war. The items themselves are all in just exceptional condition and because of their condition it's anticipated that these items were acquired sometime after his tour of duty. The first item is a very early example, of an all original and completely unaltered M1 Carbine as manufactured at the Inland Div of General Motors. This carbine has an early "5" digit serial number that is just exceptional, in that it has "ALL" the early features that were phased out of total usage through WWII, The receiver has the standard markings with the barrel marked: "INLAND MFG. DIV./GENREAL MOTORS/7-42" and of course it has the early type one two-position flip rear sight, with the small "S" on the side. It has the standard early style parkerized finish on the receiver with the "Dulite" blue finish on the barrel. This very early carbine would certainly correspond to the dates when the Raiders were very active in actual operations during late 1942 into 1943. The bolt is the correct first pattern, all blued, flat configuration with the small circled "IO" proof on the end of the lug, with the blued extractor, firing pin and ejector. The trigger guard is also the type one pattern with the upright "INLAND" on the right side, with the "H" inside a shield on the hammer with the "RI", marked sear. It still retains the early sliding or push button safety with the checkered face, and the very rare early spring-loaded take down pin. This early cross pin has the small wire spring that acts as a capture so that the pin doesn't fall completely out of the carbine. It is fitted with the early style operating slide with the parkerized finish with the blued slide lock pin with the circled "PI" inside the cutout area. The stock and handguard are also all original and unaltered. It's also the first pattern high wood with the "I" cutout for the oiler. Inside the sling cutout it has the correct early "IO/Crossed-Cannon and Ordnance Bomb" proof marks with the correct circled "P" proof on the flat of the pistol grip. This is the correct firing proof for these early carbines, which was stopped around in early to mid 1943. The handguard is also the early two-rivet version with the deep sighting cutout on top with the correct "IO" acceptance proof on the underside. To complete this carbine it is fitted with a blued magazine that has a small circled "IU" proof on the back side, an early light green canvas sling with the early "U" pattern crimped ends and a matching early green canvas two pocket, clip pouch that is marked "US/BOYLE 1942" on the back. Also accompanying this carbine is an original later war green canvas zipper carrying case stamped "US" with canvas muzzle cover stamped "US/Victory Mfg. Inc. 1944" and a Raider skull patch. There are also several other items accompanying this lot as follows; 1) an early USMC pattern Raider Bowie or survival knife, that resembles the V44 knife, (shown top of pg 135, Cole book 1); however, these were made in Australia and fitted with an unmarked, 9 3/8th inch, rough made blade with double fullers on each side. The brass crossguard is correctly stamped with the Broad-Arrow, with a small cast in "H" type proof with the all black plastic cast handle. It is complete with an original leather scabbard that has the single belt loop and retain strap. The black plastic handle does not have the typical cast in "US/H" marks however the overall appearance and aging of the knife appears to be original and authentic. Also with this group is a small box containing an original WWII "Globe and Anchor" helmet or lapel insignia with screw back, an original early safety pin type back, Expert Rifleman badge that has crossed 1903 service rifles surrounded by a wreath, the back is marked "STERLING" with a small star emblem, and a U.S. Marine Corp marksmanship ladder badge that has three bars, one for SS Pistol, Hand Grenade, and EX-SMALL Bore, with a USMC marksmanship badge on the end. Additionally with this lot is the following: 1) an original parkerized, M3, blade marked fighting knife with an original M6 leather scabbard. The blade is correctly marked "US M3 IMPERIAL" and the leather scabbard is marked on the face "U.S. M6/MILSCO//1943" over a small ordnance bomb proof, with the original leather tie-down on the end, also with this group is an original type 2 USMC Marine Raider Stiletto leather scabbard, (no knife) with original leather tie down on the end. Both scabbards are marked with the initials "R.W.W." on the front. 2) Anoriginal late production M3 fighting knife that is marked; "US/M3/IMPERIAL" on the underside of the crossguard, this has the all leather handle with an original M8 scabbard and leather tie down. 3) Later production USMC marked Kabar fighting knife with the dark black parkerized finish with the fuller on both sides with an unmarked leather scabbard. The riccaso is marked "USMC" with the reverse marked "CAMILLUS, NY.". 4) An original "Cattaraugus Commando" knife, these have a heavy 6 inch bright blade with a leather washer handle. The riccaso is marked "Cattaraugus/225Q" with the reverse unmarked. It is complete with the original unmarked leather scabbard. 5) A No. 14 Imperial, marked USN, Mark I type knife with parkerized blade and leather scabbard. The blade is marked in two lines; "IMPERIAL/PROV.RI." with the reverse blank. The scabbard is all leather sewn on the edges with five rivets. 6) U.S. Machete (18 inch) with green canvas scabbard. The scabbard and machete are both unmarked and the blade has dull blue/black finish with a dark mottled, colored, molded on handle. The scabbard has a metal throat with sewn on belt attachment on the back with nine, two-piece rivets sewn on the edges with a reinforced lower section. 7) An excellent example of a WWII M1911A1 leather holster and an early USMC marked canvas web belt and double magazine pouch. The holster is marked "MILWAUKEE SADDLERY CO./1942" on the back with leather tie down and the belt is marked "U.S.M.C." with the pouch marked "R.M. CO./1941" and the pouch contains two all blued WWII magazines. 8) An original 1941USMC Unertl Sniper scope can, with original Unertl scope bases.
