A pair of scarce historical publications, each significant within its respective field. The first is History of the Belmont Stakes - The Oldest Classic for Three Year-Olds in the United States by W. S. Vosburgh, issued in 1922 for the running of the race at Belmont Park. The booklet recounts the origins and development of the Belmont Stakes since its inauguration at Jerome Park in 1867, offering detailed accounts of early winners and the growth of American thoroughbred racing. Accompanying it is The Standard Guide of Cornwall, compiled by Addie A. Wright and published by Thomas Purdell in Cornwall, New York, circa 1870s. This local guide provides a rich portrait of Cornwall and its surrounding areas along the Hudson River, interspersed with extensive period advertising for local businesses, inns, mills, and trades. Its foxed and stained wrappers attest to age and use but also highlight the publication's rarity and local historical interest. Together, the two works highlight very different but equally fascinating aspects of American and regional history - one in the realm of horse racing tradition and the other in the everyday life and commerce of a 19th century Hudson Valley community.
