Historic high grade SxS flintlock rifle converted to percussion with framed and notarized affidavit indicating this gun belonged to the second Governor of Vermont, Issac Tichenor. According to the documentation, Tichenor was born on February 8, 1754 in Newark, New Jersey and became Deputy Commissioner of Purchases for the Northern Department of the Continental Army. After Vermont was admitted to the Union in 1791, he served as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Vermont. He was Governor of Vermont from 1797 to 1808 and subsequently was elected to the U.S. Senate for three terms until 1821. He died on December 11, 1838. This gun descended thru his family until its initial sale in 1980. The gun is in overall good condition showing a heavy dark brown patina on metal surfaces and considerable moderate pitting at the firing areas of the breech; the actions are both good, the bores are dark with some deterioration at the muzzles; the lock plates and barrels are unmarked; the iron trigger guard and iron butt plate as well as the backs of the lock plates show engraving with the bottom of the trigger guard possibly being the Tichenor family crest; the wood stock is checkered and also decorated with fancy metal decorated plates in front of the trigger guard and behind the rear ferrule that accepts a brass-tipped wood cleaning rod. There is a silver oval plaque behind the top barrel tang and there is raised carving to the wood around that tang and beneath the rear trigger guard tang including several artfully-accomplished scallops. Also included with the framed affidavit is a cut paper with Isaac Tichenor’s signature and an old postcard showing the Tichenor Mansion of Bennington, Vermont. This early American historic piece was first sold by Little John’s in 1980 and has now become available again. Few documented American Revolutionary period weapons are offered for sale and this one has great provenance to one of the early founders of our Nation. Est.: $4,000-$6,000.
