Historic and Rare World War II V-42 Case Stiletto with U.S.S. Omaha Association

Estimate: $5000 - 7500
This is an extremely rare and desirable WWII V42 Stiletto produced by the Case Cutlery Company, as made for the U.S. Navy. In February of 1943 the U.S. Navy received 70 V-42's, and they were all issued to the members of the U.S.S. Omaha's "Ship's Landing Force", which was attached to the USMC Raider Battalions. The dagger itself has a 7 inch, double edged blade, with long ricasso, with the serrated thumb print rest area below the cross guard and above that it is marked "CASE". It has a one-piece leather handle with a pointed "skull crusher" end cap. The scabbard is an original type 3, short style, with only the metal reinforcing plate on the bottom that was originally stamped "U.S.S. Omaha/R-29". Later in the war these markings was defaced to prevent identification of the individuals and the ship itself. This item is complete with an excellent contemporary oak display case with clear plastic lid and red velvet lining.

Condition: Excellent overall with 97% original blue finish with only very minor edge wear, with a razor sharp edge on both sides. The leather handle is also in excellent condition with 98% of the original leather rings and varnish/sealant on the leather handle. The scabbard is also in excellent with nice tight stitching with all the metal rivets intact with only minor scuffing of the leather. As noted the ship markings have been stamped over, with the issue number "R-29" still visible. Overall just a beautiful example of a very scarce WWII V-42 fighting knife.
