Historic "Parrott" gold scales. Made in New York in 1850 these Becker & Sons, N.Y. scales were shipped to John Parrott & Son, San Francisco, California. Bankers and mining operators in both California and Nevada. From 1850 to 1900 these scales literally weighed tons and tons of gold as it was transferred from the Parrott Plumas Mines to Wells Fargo & Co.! No records were kept but these scales are said to have weighed more gold in California in the 1800's than any other scale. Coming with the scale is an original copy of "The Pony Express" publication from August, 1967 that features the scales on the cover. Standing next to the scales is Cmd. Will Tevis, grandson of Lloyd Tevis, president of Wells Fargo & Co., 1870 to 1892. Also accompanying the scales is a biography of John Parrott and son, Tiburcio along with provenance to present day owner. The scales measure 46.5" x 43.25" x 13" and are in fair to good cond. due to the excessive use. Comes with two brass 500 oz. weights.
