Historic Original World War II Springfield Armory M1 Garand with Documentation as a Battlefield Return Rifle

This is a wonderful example of a very scarce early WWII M1 Garand Rifle that was a late WWII battlefield pickup. The serial number of this rifle (1567600) place production in the May/June 1943 time frame. This rifle along with another with a second rifle (1941 Johnson; see above) were picked up by a sailor from the USS Mercury (AK-42). The rifle is all original and unaltered or rebuilt with the following original component markings: barrel "3-S-A-5-43; operating rod: uncut "D35382-6 SA"; Bolt: "D28287-12SA/5-11"; Rear Sights: type II with original locking bar, knurled windage and elevation knobs, with the elevation knob marked "UP/DOWN" with closed arrow heads and "Battle/RANGE"; Gas Cylinder: WWII pattern with narrow base, original front sight with no seal on the front sight screw, Gas Cylinder Lock: round top unmarked; Gas Plug: solid single slot; Trigger Housing: "D28290 12-SA"; Trigger Guard: forged; Safety: Marked "C46015-9SA"; Recoil Spring Guide: with wings; Follower Rod: Short fork riveted; Bullet Guide: forged/milled; Follower Assembly; marked "11". The wood components are also all original and it is fitted with the correct WWII walnut stock stamped with a boxed "SA/EMcF" with a single circled "P" cartouche in the pistol grip. The stock has the early style stock ferrule with the drain hole; Handguard Clip: stamped/smooth; Middle Barrel Band: arched with a single stacking on each side (however missing the solid pin). In the documentation that accompanies this fabulous rifle the consignor has stated that this rifle was passed from the original Navy veteran to his brother and then on to his nephew, consequently this rifle has remained in the same family since being liberated during WWII, that's 68 years in the same family! What providence!

Very fine condition with 75% of the original WWII Springfield Armory parkerized finish overall with light wear on all the edges and high spots mixed with some light browning in various areas. As noted this rifle has all the original parts that has the same matching parkerized color. The handguards and stock are all in good condition with a nice darker color on the handguard with the stock having been varnished at some point and then sanded or scrapped, now showing minor light pressure dents and dings from battle field use. An interesting and very authentic WWII rifle as brought back by a returning WWII Navy veteran with written documentation.
