Historic New York Civil War CDV
Historic New York Civil War Carte de Visite with a Churchill & Denison backmark that initially looks as if it shows a typical U.S. Sanitary Commission Fair display. A penciled notation on the verso, however, reveals its true import as follows:"War worn flags placed in bureau of statistics". Retired New York regimental battleflags hang above a soldier identified on the back as "Lieut Brummell." His early war militia uniform and a sign reading "Marshall House Flag" contribute to understanding this image in full. The "Brummell" here is actually Francis Brownell, the soldier who killed James Jackson of the Marshall House after the Virginian's shotgun placed Colonel Elmer Ellsworth in the company of angels. On display behind Brownell is Ellsworth's uniform. The flags and relics captured in this CDV were deposited in the New York Bureau of Military Statistics and became the nucleus of the vast collection presently housed in the New York state Military Museum. A fascinating and important CDV. Soiling as expected, however a sharp image that is a delight to behold under a magnifying glass.

Shipping: Small Collectibles (view shipping information)
