Historic First Year Production Civil War Colt Model 1861 Navy Percussion Revolver with State Present
Manufactured in 1861, the first year of production, this revolver is period inscribed "Col. H.A. Smalley / from his State". An internet search of Colonel Smalley shows that he was Commander of the 5th Vermont Infantry Volunteers during the Civil War and was West Point educated. Colonel Smalley was also a member of the 2nd U.S. Artillery (exact time unknown). The top of the barrel is marked with the factory double struck (error) one line New York U.S. American address, the left side of the frame is marked "COLT'S / PATENT", the left trigger guard shoulder is marked "36 CAL" and the cylinder is roll engraved with the naval battle scene. The matching serial number is marked on the barrel, frame, trigger guard and backstrap. The wedge is tightly secured, so writer was unable to check the wedge and arbor pin numbers. The upper left front of the trigger guard is marked with the number "2" as well as above or below the serial number on the barrel, trigger guard and backstrap. The revolver is fitted with a varnished one piece walnut grip.
BBL: 7 1/2 inch round
Stock:
Gauge: 36 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened/silver
Grips: walnut
Serial Number: 1393
Condition: Very good plus. The metal surfaces have a smooth mottled gray patina with traces of original finish in the protected areas of the lug and under the loading lever. There is 40% of the original silver remaining on the trigger guard and backstrap, mostly concentrated on the top and butt of the backstrap and on and around the trigger guard bow. The otherwise fine grip has a chip of wood semi-professionally replaced on right lower side (forward) with 90% original varnish remaining, some lower edge wear and a few minor dings and dents. The action is excellent. It would be nice to reunite this inscribed Colt Model 1861 revolver with its pair as it undoubtedly once had!
