Sterling silver military unit ring that belonged to General Douglas A. MacArthur. The sterling silver ring has blue, yellow, white and gold enamel distinctive insignia of an Army unit above the latin motto: "DUCIT AMIR PATRIAE". The right side of the ring has a relief Army Quartermaster Corps insignia above the unit number, "102". The opposite side has a relief Army Eagle and Shield crest. The ring is accompanied by a type-written note dated April 27, 1964. The note which reads: "Dear Elizabeth, Thank you for your kind letter (sic) I know that Douglas would have loved hearing from you, you asked some time back for a item of his, I enclose a ring he wore in 1920 of the 102 Quartermaster unit, he cherished this ring, and I know he would have wanted you to have it, my love to you, Jean". Included with the note is an envelope addressed to: "Mrs. E.L Bringmann/752 Sherman Oaks Dr,/San Jose, Calif. The envelope has a New York, N.Y., postmark dated April 29, 1964. General Douglas A. MacArthur was one of the most famous soldiers in U.S. history and one of the most highly decorated officers in the U.S. Army. MacAurthur's decorations included the Congressional Medal of Honor, the Distinguished Service Cross and seven Silver Star medals. His military career spanned over 50 years and included service in the Philippine Insurrection, the 1914 invasion of Mexico, WWI, WWII and the Korean Conflict. Between WWI and WWII, MacArthur served as Superintendent of West Point, Chief of Staff of the Army and Military Adviser to the Philippine Commonwealth. After WWII he supervised the Allied occupation of Japan. Following retirement from the Army in 1952, General MacArthur and his wife Jean lived in a suite at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York City. Douglas MacArthur died on April 5, 1964. The ring apparently dates from 1919-1922 when MacArthur served as the Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. During his tour as Superintendent of West Point, MacArthur modernized the academy, adopted a four-year academic curriculum and formalized the Honor Code. MacArthur's association with the 102nd Quartermaster Battalion is unknown; undoubtedly the ring was a memento of some association with that unit.
