Historic Dakota Lawman Colt SAA 44-40 SN 189654 revolver with factory 4 3/4" barrel and mother of pearl grips having belonged to former sheriff turned outlaw Jack Sully. Sully came to Dakota Territory in the 1860's having been a Civil War Veteran, po revolver with factory 4 3/4" barrel and mother of pearl grips having belonged to former sheriff turned outlaw Jack Sully. Sully came to Dakota Territory in the 1860's having been a Civil War Veteran, pony Express rider and in 1872 elected Sheriff of Charles Mix County. Later Sully having married an Indian women moved to the Rosebud Indian reservation and by early accounts began a career of cattle rustling. After being indicted for illegally branding 87 head Sully was thrown in jail at Mitchell SD where he later escaped. On May 16, 1904 John Sully was shot and killed by a U.S. Marshall's posse on his ranch after trying to escape a warrant being served on him, several of his children witnessing the shooting. It was the opinion of many that Jack Sully was more of a Robin Hood than outlaw as he never stole livestock in the immediate area, often gave beef to hungry homesteaders and was a good and helpful neighbor. Several historians further believe that Sully was only tying to protect his own interests during this time when the large cattle companies were running all over the small operators as was common then.
