This Historic Sharps Model 1859 rifle manufactured in March-April 1862. This rifle is one of the 2000 Sharps Model 1859 rifles ordered specifically for issue to the 1st and 2nd U.S. Sharpshooter (U.S.S.) regiments organized and commanded by Colonel Hiram Berdan. The rifle has the distinctive double-set triggers that Berdan specified for the Sharps rifles issued to the USS. In addition to the double-set triggers, the rifle has a front sight block for an angular socket bayonet and folding leaf rear sight with 800 yard center notch. Both of these features are characteristic of USS Sharps rifles. The rifle serial number, "57544", is in the primary serial number range (54390-57574) established by author and historian Wiley Sword for USS Sharps rifles. Sharps rifles serial number 57471 and 57574 are documented as having been issued to Company G, 1st USS in 1862. In addition to the distinctive USS features, the rifle is fitted with the standard Sharps pellet primer and a casehardened iron patch box. The black walnut stock and forearm have an oil finish. The rifle is complete with a scarce Civil War russet leather sling. The barrel is roll-stamped: "SHARPS RIFLE/MANUFG. CO.
/HARTFORD CONN." in three lines ahead of the rear sight and "NEW MODEL 1859" behind it. The patent marking: "C. SHARPS' PAT/SEPT. 12th 1849" is roll-stamped in two lines on the left side of the receiver. The lock plate is roll-stamped: "C.SHARPS' PAT./OCT.5th 1852" behind the hammer and the upper right side of the receiver is roll-stamped: "R.S. LAWRENCE PAT/APRIL 12th 1859". The serial number: "57554" is stamped on the upper receiver tang and on the underside of the barrel beneath the forearm. The tiny "OWA" initials of Ordnance Sub-Inspector Orville W. Ainsworth are stamped on the left barrel flat above the stock line. Ainsworth was the primary Sub-Inspector for the USS Sharps rifle contract; his initials are stamped on most USS rifle barrels and are a key identification point for genuine USS Model 1859 Sharps rifles. The script "JT" final inspection mark of John Taylor, Chief Inspector for the USS 2,000 rifle contract, is not visible on the left side of the stock wrist. The "JT" final inspection mark is rarely present on USS Sharps rifles due to handling wear. An oval German Silver plate engraved with three script initials is fastened by two screws to the left side of the stock. The initials are engraved with punch marks and appear to be "GDV". Research of the muster rolls of the 1st and 2nd USS regiments could identify the initials. The 1st and 2nd USS regiments were recruited by Hiram Berdan, a champion target shooter, from selected Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Vermont marksmen. Berdan intended the USS to serve as an elite light infantry unit. Equipped with Sharps rifles and outfitted with distinctive green uniforms with black buttons patterned on the of the uniforms worn by the British Rifle Brigade, the USS became some of the most celebrated troops in the Army of the Potomac. The 1st and 2nd USS first saw action in June 1862 and fought in most of the battles of the Army of the Potomac until the surviving three-year volunteers were mustered out in the fall of 1864. The USS regiments distinguished themselves during the battle of Gettysburg. The 1st and 2nd USS regiments claimed to have inflicted more Confederate casualties than any other units in the Civil War. Genuine USS Sharps rifles are scarce; author Wiley Sword identified 47 surviving USS Sharps rifles by serial number in his 1988 book "SHARPSHOOTER".
BBL: 30 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 52 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 57554
Condition: Very good plus. The rifle is completely original and has all of the recognized characteristics of the 2,000 special order USS Sharps Model 1859 rifles. The rifle shows wear typical of a combat used weapon but no abuse. The barrel was polished bright during the original period of service and has a deep brown age patina above the stock line and bright finish below the forearm and under the barrel bands (many rifles and muskets with blued barrels were polished bright by troops in the field during the Civil War). There is some fine pitting on the markings on the top of the barrel and on the rear sight but most of the surfaces are smooth. The case colors on the receiver, lever, buttplate and patch box have faded to a mottled gray-brown. The buttplate has some minor pitting and surface corrosion but the other surfaces are smooth. The receiver markings are crisp and clear. The bore is bright and has been well cared for. The pellet primer is intact. The set trigger functions properly. The stock and forearm both are in very good condition with moderate handling wear and no damage or repairs. The plate on the left side of the stock is period and contemporary with the rifle. This is a fine example of a scarce USS Sharps New Model 1859 rifle.
