This Sharps New Model 1859 rifle was manufactured in March-April 1862 for issue to the 1st and 2nd U.S. Sharpshooter (USS) regiments. Raised by champion shooter Col. Hiram Berdan, the two USS regiments were composed of selected marksmen from Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Vermont. The USS regiments were issued distinctive green uniforms with black buttons that were similar to those worn by the famous British Rifle Brigade. Berdan insisted that his regiments be equipped with Sharps rifles with special order double-set triggers, rear sights graduated to 900 yards and angular, socket bayonets. This rifle is one of the 2,000 special-order, Sharps Model 1859 rifles manufactured for issue to the 1st and 2nd USS in May 1862. The rifle has the distinctive combination of double-set triggers, a front sight block for an angular socket bayonet and folding leaf rear sight with 900 yard center notch found only USS Model 1859 Sharps rifles. The rifle serial number, "56535", falls within the primary serial number range (54,390-57,574) for USS Sharps rifles established by author and historian Wiley Sword in his book "SHARPSHOOTER". The rifle has the standard Sharps pellet primer, casehardened iron patch box and nicely figured oil-finished black walnut stock and forearm. The barrel is roll-stamped "SHARPS RIFLE/MANUFG. CO./HARTFORD CONN." in three lines ahead of the rear sight and "NEW MODEL 1859" behind it. The patent marking "C. SHARPS' PAT/SEPT. 12th 1849" is roll-stamped in two lines on the left side of the receiver. The lock plate is roll-stamped "C.SHARPS' PAT./OCT.5th 1852" behind the hammer and the upper right side of the receiver is roll-stamped "R.S. LAWRENCE PAT/APRIL 12th 1859". The serial number "53535" is stamped on the upper receiver tang and on the underside of the barrel beneath the forearm. The tiny "OWA" initials of Ordnance Sub-Inspector Orville W. Ainsworth are stamped on the left barrel flat above the stock line. Ainsworth was the primary Sub-Inspector for the USS Sharps rifle contract; his initials are stamped on most USS rifle barrels and are a key identification point for genuine USS Model 1859 Sharps rifles. The Sub-Inspector initials "AWM" are stamped on the bottom of the forearm. There is no Ordnance final inspection mark on the left side of the stock wrist. The 1st and 2nd USS regiments were the elite light infantry of the Army of the Potomac. Equipped with special Sharps rifles and outfitted with distinctive uniforms, the USS were some of the best known and most celebrated regiments in the Army of the Potomac. The 1st and 2nd USS first saw action at Yorktown, Virginia in June 1862 and went on to fight in most of the battles of the Army of the Potomac until the survivors were mustered out of service in late 1864 at the end of their three-year enlistment. Of the 2,570 officers and enlisted men who served in the 1st and 2nd USS between 1861 and 1864, 278 were killed in action, 254 died of disease and 376 were wounded. The 1st and 2nd USS regiments claimed to have inflicted more Confederate casualties than any other units in the Federal army. Genuine USS Sharps rifles are scarce; author Wiley Sword identified 47 surviving USS Sharps rifles by serial number in the 1988 edition of "SHARPSHOOTER".
BBL: 30 inch round
Stock: walnut
Gauge: 52 percussion
Finish: blue/casehardened
Grips:
Serial Number: 56535
Condition: Very good plus. The rifle is in exceptional condition and is almost certainly one of the finest USS Model 1859 Sharps rifles extant. Hints of blue finish remain on the barrel with the balance having aged to an even and very attractive plum brown patina. The surfaces of the barrel are smooth; the barrel markings and "OWA" Sub-Inspection mark are crisp. The rear sight has the same deep brown patina and crisp markings as the barrel. The case hardened barrel bands have a dark brown patina. The receiver, hammer, lever and buttplate have muted case colors that have aged to a gray-brown patina. Traces of the original niter blue finish are visible on the breechblock and pellet primer. There is minimal flash pitting on the percussion nipple, hammer or breechblock. The serial number and receiver markings are crisp. The iron patch box retains about 85% of the original case colors. The stock and forearm both are in fine condition and with minor scattered dings and scratches. Most of the original raised grain is present on the forearm and the Sub-Inspection mark is very crisp. The set-triggers function fine. This is an outstanding example of a scarce and very desirable Berdan Sharps Model 1859 rifle. It would be difficult to find a field used USS Sharps rifle in better condition than this example.
