United States senator and explorer who discovered Machu Picchu (1875–1956). Two TLSs from Hiram Bingham, dated July 14 and 21, 1932, typed on his personal 7 x 9.25 National Aeronautic Association letterhead. The earlier letter, sent to Dr. Joseph S. Ames, chairman of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, references the 1931 International Convention of Trans-oceanic Flyers held in Rome and presided over by “Premier Mussolini” and “the Air Minister, General Balbo,” the latter who “approved the desire of the Convention that the next session should be held in New York and announced that the Italian Government would send a force of planes to New York, probably early in May 1933.” Hingham closes by calling for an informal meeting to discuss the proposed next session. Stapled to the front is the carbon copy reply from Ames’s secretary and Hingham’s second TLS, in which he accepts George W. Lewis to serve as Ames’s representative at the meeting in his stead. In overall fine condition, with rusty paperclip impressions to one of the letters.
