Highly Desirable Pre-World War I Colt U.S. Army Contract Model 1911 Semi-Automatic Pistol

This is an exceptionally nice all original early WWI Model 1911 Colt pistol manufactured in May 1914. This pistol is one of a group of serial numbers assigned/shipped to Springfield Armory, that were produced by Colt. The frame is a straight Colt manufactured frame with the left side stamped with "WTG" for Major Walter G. Penfield, Ordnance Inspector from Jan 1911-Sept 1914. It has the earlier short, two line/two block slide markings of "PATENTED APR.20,1897/SEPT.9, 1902. DEC.19,1905.FEB.14, 1911" followed by "COLT'S PT. F.A.MFG.CO/HARTFORD CT. U.S.A." with the Rampant Colt logo behind the slide serrations. It is fitted with all early Colt parts such as the smooth trigger, checkered slide stop, checkered thumb safety and magazine release, flat mainspring housing and wide spur hammer. It is fitted with an early post WWI, all blued Springfield Armory replacement barrel that is marked with an "S" and a "P" proof on the left side of the barrel lug with the lower left side marked with the heat lot information of "PX-1". It has the standard fixed sights, with checkered walnut grips with diamond pattern around the screws. It is complete with one early, all blue unmarked magazine with the lanyard loop on the bottom.

Gauge: 45 ACP
Finish: blue
Grips: walnut checkered
Serial Number: 72199

Excellent with 95% plus of the bright original blue finish overall with very minor edge and high spot wear overall with slight thinning on the grip straps. There are a few scattered minor freckles of surface oxidation also. The grips are both excellent with nice sharp, distinct checkering overall with no visible handling marks. Mechanically excellent. This is an attractive, excellent original example of a scarce 1914 manufactured U.S. Army contract Model 1911 pistol.
