Highly Attractive Gold Accented Royal Quality German Hunting Sword with Carved Jaedite Hilt and Bullion Adorned Velvet Sword Belt with Gilt Hardware

Measuring 31 3/4 inches in overall length, this is a superb example of the kind of side sword that would have been mandatory equipment for a European nobleman on the hunt. Worn as a counterpart to a spear or firearm, the hunting sword gave the hunter an extra layer of security if the game got too close, as well as a means to dispatch a wounded animal once the chase had come to an end. Seen in both plain, utilitarian configurations and very well decorated ones, this example rests on the latter end of the scale, with the 26 inch double fuller blade showing an 8 1/4 inch panel of rich niter blue extending from the ricasso, with a gold accented arrow on the flat spine, an engraved and gold highlighted scene of a hunter on foot with 2 dogs on the left, and antlered game being pursued by a dog on the right. Gilt brass guard, with a sculpted scroll pattern on the dual quillions, engraving around the collar, and a raised scroll and floral bordered languet with a scene of the climax of a boar hunt; the boar cornered between a pair of hunting dogs and a spear-equipped horseman preparing to deliver the killing blow while his fellow hunters look on. The hilt is carved jade, starting with a dark color at the collar, transitioning to a mixed white and ending with a brown at the pommel, which is topped with a gilt brass ball and carved in the shape of a lion's head. The scabbard is black leather, with delicate scroll engraving on the throat, middle band and tip. Completing the set is a highly attractive hunting belt, 37 1/4 inches long and 2 1/8 inches wide, constructed with a red leather backing on black velvet, decorated with golden bullion wire borders and a pattern of interwoven thorned vines on the main body and on the integral frog, and a pair of gilt finished buckles bearing the same thorned vine pattern. A similar example is specially featured in the Hunting Museum in Munich.

Very fine. Most of the original gold and niter blue is visible on the blade, with mild spotting and handling marks overall. A well aged brass patina is showing on the guard and pommel, with strong gilt finish in the protected areas and fine detail in the engraving. The hilt is attractive overall (note: not scratch tested) with a few mild age cracks. The scabbard is good, with some cracking of the leather and mild wear overall. The belt is very good, with a honest deeply aged patina on the bullion, mild fraying towards the left buckle, and minor handling marks. A top rate example of a critical piece of European hunting garb, with appointments literally fit for a king.
