Measuring 40 inches in total length, this Civil War cavalry officer's sword with a level of fit and finish well beyond most examples, including presentation ones. Of particular note is the Damascus pattern finish, a trait seen on top-flight German blades but rarely seen on American martial arms. 34 1/2 inch double fuller blade, with deeply etched scrollwork on the lower third, enhanced with hand engraving and concealing a number of serpent and wolf heads among the scrolls, a fine etched vinework on the spine, "SOLINGEN" on the left ricasso and "SCHNITZER/& KIRSCHBAUM" on the right. Gilt finished two-branch guard, with raised floral vinework and a brass wire wrapped sharkskin grip. With an iron sheath, outfitted with a smoothly beveled and polished throat, a concealed retention spring, and a small iron wheel installed in the drag. The purpose of the wheel is unknown, though it may have served a utility function, such as a sharpening device.

Very fine, with a small amount of spotting on the blade and some light handling marks overall. 40% of the original gold finish remains on the hilt, strongest in the protected areas, with a deeply aged antique patina on the brass. The grip wrapping is excellent, with only the lightest handling marks. Sheath is very good, with a mixed brown and gray patina. A superb demonstration of the Solingen bladesmith's art.
