***Auction Highlight*** 1855-s Broken 'A' Full 'E' Small 'S' 1 of less then 30 known Either s.s. Central America or the Sole Lucky Coin Not to board the ship Gold Liberty Double Eagle $20 Graded BU+ By USCG. Highlight of the Entire Auction, if you are a Gold Collector that is. Up for Auction is an ULTRA Rare 1855-s $20 Gold Liberty Double Eagle, Broken A, Full E, Small s Variety, with the Centered Mintmark. I have done extensive research on this coin. Per Doug Winter, the foremost expert on the Type One Liberty Double Eagles, “All 1855-S double eagles have Slanting 5’s in the date. Most have a normal A in STATES while a very small number have a broken crossbar on this letter.” Further Doug goes on to state, “There are a number of positional varieties and two important mintmark varieties exist. Small S: The mintmark is placed directly over the N in TWENTY and the serifs of the mintmark are clear. This variety appears to be scarcer than the next. Medium S: The mintmark is positioned more to the left and it is over the left of the middle of the N in TWENTY. The top serif of the mintmark either joins or is very close to the body. This variety appears to be far more common. The coin at Hand has the Rare Broken A, as well as the Small s Mintmark centered over the N. I have shown closeups of both. Now this would have been simple enough, prior to the two major and one minor shipwreck discoveries,. This coin would just have been the ULTRA Rare variety of the ULTRA Rare 1955-s. But, There were 59 examples found in the S.S. Republic including seven in Uncirculated. At least 63 Uncirculated pieces were included in the group of 304 recovered from the S.S. Central America and a number were included in a shipwreck found off the coast of Florida in the early 1970’s. But of all of these shipwreck coins, None but some of the ones found on the S.S. Central America, had the Broken A. But the mystery doesn’t end there. All of the S.S. Central America Coins were certified and hollered by PCGS. But upon my extensive search, I have found ZERO coins with the Broken A and the Centered Mint Mark in any holder except the ones in the S.S. Central America Holders of PCGS. So the coin at hand is either one of two things. It is either the SOLE surviving example of the Broken A, Small s Mintmark, with the centered mintmark that was not recovered from the S.S. Central America, or this is an S.S. Central America coin, which has been cracked out of a PCGS Gold Foil Holder. The rarer of the two possibilities would be that it was the sole example of this Rare Variety to not set sail on the Ill Fated Ship, the other more common possibility is it is one of the 20 uncirculated Shipwreck examples recovered. Either Way, This coin Trends over $25,000 in Unc A Corey's Pick, Bid to Win, Don't let it get Away, you might not find its equal Coin. I give this coin my highest recommendation
