The absolute Key to the Walking Liberty Half Dollar Series. In au50 the 1921-s trends $7,900, But This wild coin arrived to us from a very reliable source in a manilla folder with the following notes handwritten. “1921-s Half Dollar Sea Salvaged from Charlotte Amalie Harbor Wreck (St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands) - from Mendel Peterson’s collection - Smithsonian Institution Curator.” Our research into the above reveals that : Mendel L. Peterson (March 8, 1918 – July 30, 2003) was an American pioneer in the field of underwater archeology and former curator at the Smithsonian Institution, becoming known as "the father of underwater archeology". His specialties included underwater exploration and numismatics. Peterson Island in Antarctica is named after him. Further that ex Mendel Peterson coins have from time to time arrived at various coin auctions. As far as the Shipwreck, :The WIT Shoal II sunk sometime in the late 1940’s off the coast of the Virgin Islands and was salvaged in the early 1950’s. Based on these set of facts and the origin of the coin, I feel we can say that the Provenance of this coin is ex Mendel Peterson, Salvage coin from the WIT Shoal.
