High quality percussion target rifle signed “P. Smith Buffalo, NY 1856”, with lock marked “C. L. Barnes”. The rifle measures 50-1/2” overall, with approx. 34” heavy octagon barrel of .40 caliber, rifled, measuring approx. 1-1/4” across the flat of the muzzle. The rifle is equipped with a bullet starter and mold. The barrel is marked “Cast Steel” and probably by Remington. The rifle is also nicely mounted with German silver mounts and patch box, which are lightly engraved. The barrel shows a deep brown patina finish with scattered light erosion and pinprick pitting, generally good metal condition, just some normal aging. The lock and tang have been polished to bright and show some minor erosion and pinprick pitting beneath this light polish. The stock is good to very good with fairly sharp checkering at the wrist, most of its original varnish, some small losses at the edges, normal storage and use only. The action is crisp, the bore very good plus. An original to the period peep sight is mounted in the tang. A good rifle in a classic New York style. Est.: $1,250-$2,500
