High grade custom rifle on a ’03 Springfield action signed by “Griffin & Howe, New York”, S/N 491 on the barrel. Gold inlaid on the left side of the receiver “G.L. Wotkyns, U.S. Army” with fancy engraved action and floorplate showing moose head and fine engraving. The grip cap is profusely engraved en suite. There is a gold plaque in the belly of the stock engraved in block initials “G.L.W.” The butt plate is milled with a trap for cartridges. The stock is finely checkered walnutwith horn fore end cap. Marked .30-06 Gov. caliber in its original state. The condition is fine to near excellent showing just minor handling and use. A leather hard shell Pre-War case for this rifle is included. The case is marked “Capt. G.L.Wotkyns, Ord. Dept. U.S. Army”. Capt G.L. Wotkyns was a pioneer of wildcat cartridges and aided in the development and improvement of the .22 hornet cartridge. Wotkyns was stationed at the Presidio San Francisco in the Pre-war era and FredHuntington acquired his rifles in the 1950s.
