High grade French Empire period double barrel flintlock fowler with silver mounts signed “Dieppe in Postel”. The gun measures 50” overall with 34-1/4” barrels of approx. 20 gauge smooth bore; the gun is in very gooduntouched condition and looks like it just came down out of an attic. The stock is nicely carved and checkered with the figure of a dolphin carved in the grip and fancy border carving with fish scale typecheckering at the wrist. The mounts are hallmarked and nicely engraved with classic florals and Grecian urns. The gun is in its original flintlock state, missing one top jaw and screw on right hammer; the locks show alight brown patina and were originally bright finished; the locks show sharp engraving and platinum lined pans and touch holes (one pan missing most of the lining). The barrels show French proofs at the breech with tracesof gold damascene within engraving. The barrels show a dark brown with some pitting and erosion and some dents. The stock is good to very good with one large crack and small loss where a knot or imperfection in the wood
