High-grade silver ore from the Rawhide Mine, Mineral County, Nevada, approx 65 x 50 x 35 mm. Clearly a cemented breccia, this specimen shows infilling with dark grey quartz, possibly containing argentite, and secondary oxidation of iron minerals. Original collector identified some of the reddish brown secondary mineralization as cerargyrite, a.k.a. chlorargyrite -- a silver chloride that is a weathering product of silver-bearing material in a dry environment. The Rawhide Mine and the town of Rawhide have been essentially obliterated by subsequent, large-scale mining operations. This is a representative specimen of much earlier operations, however, the date of extraction is not known.
