Hideous Sun Demon Prototype/Production Latex Mask
It's amazing how mega-budget movies can be instantly forgotten almost before they are released, and yet tiny bottom-of-the-barrel budgeted films, usually "sci-fi" in theme can entertain and gain "cult" status forever. Of course "Plan 9 From Outer Space" is the granddaddy of such films, but there are literally dozens more that continue to hang in our collective conscience. One of these is the popular "radiation creates a monster" themed independent films , with the delicious title of "The Hideous Sun Demon" (1959). Written, produced, directed and starring Robert Clarke, a boy from Oklahoma who always dreamed of Hollywood, and actually ended up having a rather lucrative career as a TV actor, "Sun Demonr" was shot on consecutive weekends, so that Clarke could rent equipment for one day (Sunday's were free!). There is a sweet innocents to films this bad, which is probably why they gather so many fans. Of course the biggest expense is the 'Hideous" costume that had to be created. Of course only one latex head mask and body suit was made. However a few prototypes were created before the actual "movable" head mask. This is one of these. It was given to legendary collector, movie historian, and owner of the infamous "Jerry's Video", Jerry Neeley by Robert Clarke himself. He told Jerry that the prototype could have also been used, if his memory served him well, on some long shots for the final chase scene between Clarke as the monster and the police (since he was also directing, and the actual make-up mask took a long time to put on). He remembered that the mask was a bit of a nightmare since it wasn't meant to be used in production since it had not eye or breathing holes! This also includes a Letter of Provenience from Jerry Neeley's widow and co-owner of his various video and memorabilia shops. The latex, hand painted prototype is extremely fragile considering its age, and is meant for display an not to be worn!
