Hessler X99D $100 Act of October 12, 1837 Treasur
Hessler X99D $100 Act of October 12, 1837 Treasury Note Very Good+++, PC. This hand-dated April 16, 1838 note was in the John J. Ford Collection, and is listed in An Illustrated History of U.S. Loans by Gene Hessler as a R-8, 1 - 3 known. This is an utmost rarity in the field of American paper money, that was redeemed, received four punch cancels in the Treasurer of the United States signature, plus a penned cancelled notation was added across its face. At that point, it was spirited away, and landed in numismatic circles. Farran Zerbe would purchased the note in 1922, and added a card (included with the note) written in his hand that lists provenance, costs (using his hieroglyphic-like code), plus his thoughts that includes, this is the only known issued note between the 1815 Treasury Notes and the 1861 Demand Notes. The route of this note, starting in 1913, known to Mr. Zerbe is - Charles Steigerwalt, Henry Chapman, A.A. Leve, and Farran Zerbe. This intact note circulated, as it has two penned endorsements on the back, minute apertures mostly along the lateral center fold, and a deft glue repair was made along the vertical center fold. No matter what this note brings tonight, its historical importance will still outweigh its monetary costs.
