"Hero of Fort Sumter" Robert Anderson Autograph Letter Signed in the third person "General Anderson". One page, 4" x 5.25", embossed "A" notepaper, New York, November 26, 1868, to E. W. Stoughton. Anderson "...accepts with pleasure Mr. Stoughton's invitation for Saturday night." Robert Anderson was the commanding officer at Fort Sumter when it was bombarded by Confederate forces led by General Beauregard, a former pupil of his at West Point. He was badly outnumbered and outgunned and finally surrendered the fort on the third day. This battle, of course, started the Civil War and Anderson was promoted due to his heroism. Interestingly, as a colonel of Illinois volunteers, Anderson had the distinction of twice mustering Captain Abraham Lincoln in and out of army service. Very fine condition.
