Hermann Dischler (1866-1935), ‘Winter am Feldberg’, 1907
This evocative landscape painting was created by the Black Forest painter Hermann Dischler and is dated to 1907. Dischler, who describes himself as ‘Schneemaler’ (snow painter), spent much time in the Black Forest. The liquid-painted, light-flooded winter landscape with fir trees in the Black Forest is characterized by the effective use of light and shadow. The sky is crossed by muted purple cloud bands, covering the snow here and there with shadowed parts.

The painting is signed and dated ‘H. Dischler. II. 07’. Verso with old typographic studio label. The varnish is partly lightly yellowed with occasional tiny brown spots. Otherwise, overall of good impression. The image measures 28 x 18.5 cm. The framed dimensions are 35.5 x 26 cm. The frame shows slight signs of use.

Hermann Dischler (1866-1935)

Painter Hermann Dischler was born in Freiburg im Breisgau in 1866. He studied at the Art School in Karlsruhe from 1885 to 1894, where he became a master student of Gustav Schönleber. In the 1890s, he regularly travelled through southern Germany. Especially the Black Forest has drawn his affection. He lived there for quite some time and portrayed the idyllic landscapes in numerous paintings. He usually took photographs as a template. Furthermore, Dischler was chairman of the artists' association ‘Breisgauer Fünfer’ and the ‘Freien Künstlervereinigung Baden’ as well as the Baden Black Forest Association. In 1917 he was appointed professor by Grand Duke Friedrich II. In addition, he built his own artist house in the southern Black Forest, where he organized exhibitions on a regular basis.
