American author (1915-2019) who is best known for historical fiction such as The Caine Mutiny, which won the Pulitzer Prize. TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, March 3, 1980. Letter to Lauri Paananen of Phoenix Mutual Insurance, in full: "The enclosed correspondence will bring you up to date on the question of placing the Einstein bust as the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Mrs. Wouk and I inspected the available locations in the structure for a work of noble proportions. The site the College has selected is much the best. Everybody who enters and leaves the College will be moved by the sight of the statue. The interior locations lack comparable visibility or free space, though one or two are all right. I'm sure the College wants to get on with a dedication of the statue. May I suggest to you and Mrs. Kallio that the College proceed to place it outside, with the understanding that close watch will be kept on its condition, and that it will be moved inside if any sign of deterioration is observed? The president of the college, Dr. Friedman, is himself an amateur sculptor, and a great admirer of the Kallio bust Einstein. I'm sure he will personally keep a fond eye on it." In fine condition, with some light creasing.
