Herman Wouk Letter Signed "Herman Wouk". One page, 10 1/4" x 7 1/4"; October 24, 1952.

Letter written to Mr. Paul C. Smith, Editor of the San Francisco Chronicle.

Wouk writes, in part:

"I know if you (Smith) only as an editor of national reputation, whose fortitude in joining the Marine Corps as a private during the war was an unforgettable symbol. Therefore I cannot help adding that I am absolutely astonished at the part of your telegram which dismisses a considered public utterance by people like Carl Sandburg, Pearl Buck, John Steinbeck, John O'Hara as a 'so-called author's statement'. I trust that our exchange from here on can be conducted on a basis of mutual good faith..."

With some spotting from age and folds as noted. Includes Wouk's hand-edited notations.

The Washington Post called Wouk, who cherished his privacy, "the reclusive dean of American historical novelists".
