Herman Melville: The Confidence-Man: His Masquerade (New York: Dix, Edwards & Co., 1857), first edition, 394 pages, green tooled cloth boards with gilt spine titles, 12mo (5" x 7.75"). The spine has been repaired on this copy, with what appear to be new endpapers. The boards show bumped corners, mild edge wear, and dustsoiled textblock edges, else very good. Pieces of the original spine are included in an envelope laid in. A rare first edition of the last novel to be published in Melville's lifetime. Interestingly, Melville died 34 years later, attesting to the fact that Melville was all but forgotten in his own time, an unthinkable idea for modern times.

Shipping: Books & Catalogs (view shipping information)
