Herman Melville Moby Dick ALS Letter Signed
Author of “Typee”, “Omoo”, “Billy Budd”, and his masterpiece “Moby Dick”, the cryptic tale of Captain Ahab’s obsessive hunt for the great white whale that cost him his leg. A very rare and desirable handwritten letter by Melville. This letter is dated January 13, 1872, New York, to a Miss Coffin responding to her question in an earlier letter. The letter reads, in full: "Miss Coffin: So long a time has elapsed that I can not recall where I got the facts alluded to in your letter of the 9th Jul. Neither-I am sorry to say---can I direct you where to get information additional to what you may now possess. With much respect H. Melville." The letter is in overall excellent condition with minor matte burn around the outer edge which is scarcely visible in the display offered here. Nicely matted with a portrait of Melville. A literary autographic treasure as material on Melville is not often found on the market and is legendary in its rarity. Handwritten letters are the rarest of his material. Est. 16000 - 18000
