Austrian orchestra and opera conductor (1908-1989) and one of the most renowned conductors in music history. His obituary in The New York Times described him as “probably the worlds best-known conductor and one of the most powerful figures in classical music.” ALS, in German, signed “Herbert,” two pages both sides, 7 x 9, no date, but summer of 1924. A long and humorous letter from the 16-year old to his parents in Salzburg. Karajan traveled to Bournemouth by himself in order to improve his English. Karajan writes about the experiences on his trip. In part: “Until Buchs, the ride was rather boring, after that, however, it was very beautiful, especially Lake Zurich…The night ride was very uncomfortable, which was caused by an upset stomach as a consequence of the horrible food in the dining car…Yes Paris! This city did not only meet my expectations, it was even more magnificent than I have ever imagined. What is Vienna compared to that…This only shows you how poor you are.” On the stormy ferry ride to Southampton, he “cheerfully enjoyed the moonlit night on the sea” instead of suffering from the expected seasickness. He also writes that the customs officers had made “a bulky tangle out of my well arranged clothes…Bournemouth itself is just a city like every other, there are even tramways and I should also mention that the lavatories in the streets, there, are subterranean.” In very good condition, with small tear and paper loss to top edges, bisecting folds, a bit of scattered light toning and soiling, and conclusion of letter and signature a bit cramped.
