c1890 This lot includes more than 100 items, including many letters, prescriptions, billheads, receipts and correspondence (with covers) all relating to Harvard graduate and Idaho Springs physician Herbert Burr Howard (and a photograph of him, 1895). While most came west in search of gold, Dr. Howard took the journey at the urging of his Harvard classmate and friend Theodore Roosevelt, who advised him on what it would take for an Easterner to succeed on a cattle ranch in the West (a copy of the letter is enclosed). By 1905, Howard had become the head resident physician at Mass General in Boston. Howard received revenues from mining properties for decades, even though he moved back east in 1888 (to get married?). The lot also includes a reprint of Howard’s obituary from May, 1923, published in Modern Hospital Magazine and a 4”x 8” cabinet card of Dr. Howard photographed by Lothrop & Cunningham of Lowell, Mass. This is a very interesting record of an early westerner who went into the mining camps after receiving advice from Teddy. One of the letters mentions a mine on Fall River (7.10.89). One of the billheads shows a blacksmith that moved up from Tombstone in the 1880's. - HKA#65149
