TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, January 14, 1952. Letter to noted real estate developer and rancher Hulett C. Merritt, in full: "I have known Senator Taft since I gave him his first public job over thirty years ago. Because of my knowledge of his ability, integrity and understanding of government, I hope he will be nominated. I believe he is the only Republican who can be elected, as witness his last victory in Ohio where he carried industrial and farm districts alike against the most powerful opposition. Your suggestion is most complimentary, but the job requires a younger man." In fine condition, with staple holes to the upper left corner. Accompanied by a carbon copy of Merritt's reply from January 17, 1952. After failing to receive the Republican nomination leading up to the 1940 and 1948 presidential elections, Robert A. Taft, the elder son of former President William H. Taft, sought the presidential nomination a third time in 1952, and was widely viewed as the front-runner. However, Thomas E. Dewey and other moderates convinced General Dwight D. Eisenhower to enter the race, and Eisenhower narrowly prevailed at the 1952 Republican National Convention.
