TLS, one page, 7.25 x 10.5, personal letterhead, October 12, 1943. Hoover asks Miles Jones to muster support for a speech the former president plans to deliver. In part: “On Thursday, October 28th, I am delivering what I think is a rather important speech on the question of peace…I think it is desirable to get as much distribution as possible…As you may know, under the present set up in the broadcasting company, the local stations are free to take a public address or not, just as they like. The local stations are responsive to local interest and demand, and often the only way they will broadcast such an address is if the people in the different towns call up their stations and ask that they take the program…I am enclosing herewith a list of the stations in New York and I am wondering if you have somebody in your office who could communicate with people in these towns and ask them to make sure the speech is delivered over their local station.” In fine condition, with some marginal holes and edge tears to left edge. Two weeks later, on October 28, in the midst of World War II, Hoover would deliver the speech he references here in Kansas City.
