U. S. Grant's vice president (1812-1875) who died during his term in office. ALS as vice president, signed “H. Wilson,” one page, 7.75 x 9, April 21, 1875. Written from Natick, a letter to his "Dear Brother John," in part: "Just received your note, and regret to find you are not so well as when we parted. You have many trials, but we must bear them. They will soon end and these I trust of Heavenly Father will reward us in a better Life. Trust in Him, dear brother and hope for the best. My health is better, but I go at the Doctor's request to California for a few weeks. I hope to visit you this summer." In very good to fine condition, with faint toning, and a repaired tear passing through the signature. Following a stroke suffered in May 1873, Wilson experienced bouts of ill health for the remainder of his life, succumbing to yet another stroke on November 22, 1875, only seven months after penning this hopeful missive.
