Partly-printed DS, signed “Henry Wells" and "Jas. C. Fargo,” one page, 12 x 8.25, May 1, 1866. Stock certificate for five shares in the American Express Company issued to G. C. Churchill, signed at the conclusion by Henry Wells as president, James C. Fargo as secretary, and Alex Holland as treasurer. The attractive blue-border type certificate is illustrated with a vignette of a watchdog, used by the company to symbolize trust and security. In fine condition.

Henry Wells (1805-1878) was a co-founder, with William Fargo, of both the American Express Company and Wells Fargo & Company. Fargo's brother, J. C. Fargo (1829-1915), served as a president of American Express for 30 years and pioneered the development of traveler's cheques.
