Signed book: The Divine Comedy of Dante Alighieri. First edition. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1873. Hardcover, 7 x 9.5, 410 pages. Signed vertically on the second free-end page in ink, “I enter, and I see thee in the gloom. Of the long aisles, O poet Saturnine! And strive to make my steps keep pace with thine, Henry W. Longfellow.” The front cover and both opening free-end pages detached, toning, light soiling, and paper loss to the signed page, a light strip of toning along the top edge of all pages, peeling spine, bumps to the corners, light surface loss and wear to the cover, otherwise good to very good condition. Despite the condition of the exterior, the signed sentiment stands bold and clear, and can easily be matted and framed for a gorgeous display piece. One of the five famed Fireside Poets, Longfellow was the first American to translate the Divine Comedy, and coupled with this incredibly unique and intact quote and signature, this item presents an invaluable piece of literary history.
